Rev. Charles K. Cuthbert

Rev. Charles K. Cuthbert 82, of Summerville, South Carolina peacefully entered eternal rest on January 13, 2025. A native of St. Helena Island, SC, born on August 23, 1942. He was the son of the late Ethel Samson and John M. Johnson. He received his basic education in the public schools of Beaufort County. He attended various institutions of higher learning including Alabama State University, Troy State University, Montgomery AL and Trident Technical College, North Charleston, SC. Some of his seminary training includes Morris College School of Religion, Charleston Southern University and International Seminary-Charleston Branch and Seminary Extension Independent Study Institute, Nashville, Tennessee. Rev Cuthbert served twenty years in the United States Navy, which included a tour of duty in Vietnam. He served on various Naval vessels such as USS Decatur, USSN K. Perry, USS Wilkinson, and USS Cone. He was stationed on several different Bases which included USNTC Great Lakes, CPTP-NAD, Coro, CA, Nav-Air Station, Glenview IL., NAS Lakehurst N.J, Nav-Air Station, Jax FL, Nav-Mar Corescen, Montgomery AL. and Nav-Sta, Charleston, SC He also served at two schools, DK “A” School in New Port, RI and YN/PN “A” school in New Orleans, LA. He retired with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Post retirement he worked at Robert Bosch for seven years. He accepted the call to the Gospel Ministry in August 1987 and was licensed at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the Pastorate of the late Rev. Fred D. Dawson. June 1993 he was installed as Pastor of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where he served until August 2004. Rev Cuthbert moved his membership to Bethlehem Missionary Baptist where he served as associate pastor under the Pastorate of Rev. Dr. R.M. Pitts Jr. until his death. He then was installed as the second pastor of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church until he retired in 2014 and became Pastor Emeritus. He eventually moved his membership to Greater Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He is the past President of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Charleston County and Vicinity, serving in this capacity for six years. During his presidency he established two scholarship funds for deserving high school seniors in Charleston County and St. Helena Island, SC. He was past Secretary of the Executive Board and Chairman of the Home Mission Board and past Treasurer of the Charleston County Baptist Association. He was an active member of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc., the SCE&M Convention and the NAACP. Rev Cuthbert was proceeded in death by his parents Ethel Samson and John M. Johnson, Paul, and Mary Cuthbert his sister Loretta Simmons, and his brother Louis Rivers. He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Arthurmae S. Cuthbert of Summerville, SC; his two adult children, June Aiken, Charlotte NC and retired MSgt Kevin Cuthbert (Natalie) Rockhill, SC.; five grandchildren, Brittany (Lionel), Eddie, Isaac IV, Rachel, and Matthew; seven great grandchildren, Alana, Bri’yana, EJ, Rennedy, Chloe, Caleb and Rezi’a; sisters. Deborah Lynard and Geneva Inabinett (Eddie); brother, Moses Cuthbert; several brothers & sisters-in-laws; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; dear friend, Dea. Freddie Brisbane, other relatives, church family & friends.
